THE KINESIS

The Kinesis is a performing arts center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, designed as an extension of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. The project provides a platform for diverse performances, catering to students, visitors, and the local community.

The design responds to the urban context by connecting to Lafayette Square with a public plaza and a prominent entrance. It also considers the nearby residential areas, introducing another public plaza and a carefully placed entrance to ensure accessibility and integration. The building features four main entrances, all converging in a central lobby that distributes movement to other levels through an atrium.

The slanted columns and sloped walls enhance natural lighting while shaping a form that mirrors the energy of the performances within. Spaces are organized based on acoustic and privacy needs: louder, public areas like the auditorium and black box theater are located underground, while quieter, more private spaces such as classrooms and the library occupy the upper floors.

The Kinesis combines thoughtful design, functionality, and context, creating a space where performance, education, and community come together.

Site Context

The surrounding site has two key elements: a public plaza with high pedestrian activity to the southwest and residential units to the northeast. The design connects the public plaza to the proposal through a new public plaza and green spaces, enhancing accessibility and flow.

Program Strategies

The programming layout is guided by two key factors: public versus private spaces and loud versus quiet spaces. Public and loud areas, like the auditorium and black box theater, are located underground, while quieter, private spaces such as the library and classrooms are placed on the upper levels. A one-way circulation system for public users ensures a clear separation between educational and public areas, maintaining functionality and privacy.
